About Us

The Pennsylvania Alliance for Retired Americans’ (PARA’s) mission is to educate, organize, and mobilize seniors, workers, and unions to protect and advance retirement security for current and future generations. As an arm of the labor movement, we work with labor and community organizations to advocate for social justice.

PARA is the Pennsylvania chapter of the national Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA), the retiree arm of the AFL-CIO, which aims to ensure that every worker in America can retire with dignity. A primary objective of the Alliance is to enroll and mobilize senior union members and other senior and community activists into a nationwide grassroots movement advocating a progressive political and social agenda – one that respects work and strengthens families. The long-term goal of the Alliance is to become the voice for all older Americans. By engaging in important political battles to protect, preserve, and expand programs vital to the health and economic security of older Americans, the Alliance will gain recognition as the country’s leading progressive grassroots senior organization.

To accomplish these goals, PARA:

  • conducts political education for unions, retiree councils, and community members and organizations
  • conducts voter outreach and organizing
  • speaks out at town halls, rallies, protests, and press conferences
  • lobbies state and federal officials representing Pennsylvania
  • works in coalition with unions and progressive organizations
